Maelle looks at the mirror shards scattered across the floor, a disarray of sharp and jagged pieces that can never be put back together again. "I know you’re not him..." she admits in a shaky whisper. Her tear-filled eyes find Verso, the blues and greys of paint starting to unravel the edges of them, mocking him. "But you deserve to be happy,” she says. We deserve to be happy, she means.
“I deserve to be myself,” Verso says, and it sounds like a plea more than anything else. The skin around his left eye aches, as if it’s waiting for his scar’s return.
Maelle sighs before she sweeps her hand through the air, calling for her rapier. It appears in a flutter of gold petals, glimmering in the dim light of the bathroom. Her eyes are cast in shadow and her disappointed smile is somewhat crooked. "Alright. Let's try again."
or: Maelle wants a happy end for everyone she cares about, and she will keep trying until even Verso gets it right.

Killing in Lumiere was tricky, to say the least. People reacted poorly to finding a corpse. Even if, after they faded, the city soon forgot their presence. As long as he didn’t kill anyone that Maelle had known, that small group of people she actually cared about and the people nearest them, Maelle wouldn’t notice. So many of the city's inhabitants would go unnoticed.
AU Of Verso turning to mass murder in the wake of being forced to exist, and Gustave wanting to chase the bliss of non-existence himself after having been unwillingly made immortal.

He said it so quietly it wasn’t even a whisper, more like an exhalation. And that was what all this came down to, in the end. It wasn’t a desire to be a woman some or all of the time, or even to look like a woman–instead, what Chris wanted was to sand down his edges, to give himself a different coat of paint. To shed the persona of the huge masculine protector with the weight of the world on his shoulders, and just exist as something else for a couple of hours every weekend. Was that so much to ask?
Evidently, because as he spun in place to watch the way the delicate skirt fell around his not-so-delicate thighs, he heard a noise that caused him to freeze like a deer caught in headlights.
