HARRY DU BOIS - “Maybe I’ll forget again,” he says. "Maybe I can fuck myself up bad enough. Pass me off to some other poor fucker too good for me.”
YOU - “Don’t.” Your tone is sharper than you intend it to be.
HARRY DU BOIS - “First Jean, and now you. Looks like he was right. Fuck.”
YOU - “With all due respect, detective, do not compare me to Satellite Officer Vicquemare.” That sentence comes out exactly as cutting as you meant.
HARRY DU BOIS - He looks at you— squints at you, really. “You don’t like him?”

Summary
Roy rolled his eyes, "Oh, it's not that big a deal, Jamie! Look, if you're going to be such a pussy about it maybe I'll try it out on Sam first, let you see how it's—"
"No!" Jamie yelped. He glanced out into the locker room. Poor Sam was a kid. "No, I'll do it. Don't rope anyone else in." He bit his lip. Ground out the last word. "Please."
Or: Roy thinks they're talking about a harmless prank. Jamie thinks that Roy found evidence from years ago, when a coach took advantage of him. And now Jamie's pretty sure it's happening again.

Roy’s doing Jamie a massive favour by training him. Both of them know it. And seeing as Roy’s career-ending knee injury was Jamie’s fault, he’d be well within his rights to refuse to train him altogether.
While out drinking with the Richmond team, Jamie finds himself spiralling.

Summary
Jamie's in free-fall.
But he's lived it enough times in his dreams, hasn't he? Ted'll see him, and Ted'll catch him, and Ted'll tell him to breathe. 'Cept Ted en't moving, is he, which doesn't make sense, does it, 'cause there's nothing between 'em, this time—just James Fucking Tartt.
Ted en't moving, right, and Jamie en't waking up.
Or: Jamie's sorry for a lot of things, actually.

Summary
Roy hadn’t seen him the last time he was in London, eyes full of fear as his bad decisions caught up with him and kept him from returning to football. She told him to talk to Ted, thinking Ted would happily agree to sign him back to the squad. Why wouldn’t he? Richmond still hadn’t won a match, Rebecca was getting increasingly irritated with all the draws, and they were in a slump that Jamie Tartt could definitely pull them out of. She didn’t know if Jamie actually spoke with Ted, but Ted never mentioned seeing him, and Jamie never showed up at Nelson Road. She tried to ring him once to find out if he was okay. It rang and rang and eventually went to voicemail. She left him a message that was never returned.
That wasn’t like Jamie.

Bookmarking preemptively at chapter 7 bc it's been such a long time since I cried this much at a fic and I NEED to make sure I have it saved even if I don't end up liking the rest of it
Update: still liked the rest of it, but I really don't think anything could beat those first couple chapters

Summary
Because he’s always been like this, right. When his mind fixates on something, he can’t stop it. When it’s football that he’s fixated on, that’s usually a good thing— now that he’s back at Richmond, he needs to get back into the swing of things, so he often lays awake thinking of strategy and tactics. But sometimes, the other thing his brain really likes to focus on and think about is dogs.
He knows a lot about dogs.

Summary
After a series of misunderstandings, and due to a complete lack of communication, Roy discovers he and Jamie are not, in fact, engaging in a dom/sub relationship and Jamie finds out he is not, in fact, being punished for things he doesn't understand.
Featuring: Jamie's self-esteem issues, Roy's inability to use his words like a grown-up, and the "I'll take what I can get because it’s you and you couldn’t possibly want me the way I want you” trope.

Summary
He’d heard many, many things about Jamie Tartt from various people around the club, and none of them had been particularly complimentary. When the team came back for pre-season training, Dani had mentioned his name in passing, which lead to an hour-long session of insults and bad impressions. Then last month, Declan had stuck a poster he’d found of the Lust Conquers All contestant up in the dressing room; within the first hour, it had been defaced with sharpie and something Will really hopes was shampoo. After last week’s 0-0 draw, he’d overheard Sam and Babatunde discuss how much better they felt while playing without worrying about him not passing or blaming them for his slip-ups. And of course, whenever Nate pulled him up for not folding the towels correctly, or not organising the boots in the right order, or not filling the water bottle exactly to the 500ml mark, he would make sure he knew how lucky he was Jamie Tartt wasn’t here, he’d fuck you right up if he saw you do that. So suffice to say, Will was expecting things to take a turn for the worse when he heard the striker addressing him.

Summary
I want to die.
Jamie stares at it for a bit; decides he likes the way it looks in his handwriting. Jots it down a couple more times, all in a row, roughly the same size. He can't put a finger on it, but something about it makes him feel good. Maybe 'cause it's the first time he's been honest with himself in like, ever.

Summary
Jamie shakes his head. “No, um, they need to discharge him to someone’s care, and I’m… next of kin or whatever they call it. His only family. So. I’ve got to…” He looks absolutely dazed, and Roy pushes his chair back, not entirely sure he doesn’t need to go catch him. “I’ve got to pack a bag and get up to Manchester, I guess. Stay with him til he’s back on his feet, he’s not going to be able to care for himself for a bit.”
(Roy certainly isn't going to let him go alone.)

Summary
“You ever feel like you’re stuck?” Roy asks.
“Stuck?”
He doesn’t imagine they’ll believe him, so he can’t outright say what he thinks is going on. “Living the same day over and over again.”
Ted hums. “Like in Stranger than Fiction?”
“More like Groundhog Day.”
Both Ted and Beard turn to look at him. “Expound,” Beard says.—
Roy worries his one-on-one time with Jamie might be done with soon. The universe finds a way to make him realise what that actually means.

Summary
They all wear trainers to Jamie’s funeral.
They’re all black, Will arranged a special order for the team, but they’re undeniably trainers. They don’t mean it as any sort of disrespect, like they’re making the day less formal, but Jamie wouldn’t have wanted them hurting. Or at least, not any more than the day already hurts. Every Greyhound is otherwise dressed to the nines, but the trainers unite them. Gotta have the same kit, don’t they? They reach out to the Man City lads too, let them know not to bother cramming their feet into dress shoes.

Summary
"...Junior?"
Is the lad giving him the cold shoulder? He knows Jamie didn't want to see him drunk, but this seems like a bit of a strop. Last night wasn't too bad or anything; the images come in bits and pieces. He came to Jamie's door, they shouted a bit back and forth, he threw a bottle, they argued some more, then James passed out on the couch.
Or wait. Was there more yelling after the bottle? Door, yelling, bottle, yelling, quiet, couch, right? Or was it door, yelling, bottle, quiet?
"Junior, wake up."
When did the quiet start?
