John Watson is missing during an Underground derailment. Both a very pregnant Mary and Sherlock fear for his safety. While John is surviving disasters Underground, Sherlock tries to find his friend and grapples with the difficulties of human nature in crisis—especially his own. (All disclaimers about not owning Sherlock apply.) AU Season 4 - Mostly canon compliant with BBC Sherlock BUT written BEFORE Season 4's January 1st 2017 premiere.

It reminds him of the early days—when they shared chuckles, camaraderie, and cases. Looking into its faceted surface, he gets lost in special memories. One night, it 'transports' him to a case that challenged Sherlock to "solve a murder without a body."

(Sherlock BBC 3:1) Scenes and Subtexts from The Empty Hearse. What were John's thoughts after discovering Sherlock was alive? What were Sherlock's after John's rejection? Each chapter inserts words not spoken that explores how their friendship survives The Fall.
(This is one of my earliest fix-it fanfics. While the writing style is not as lean as my later fix-it fics and stand-alone mysteries, this piece provides great insights that I still believe about the characters. Also, it remains faithful to the BBC series with some liberties.)
