Aang’s chest had been tight with worry for weeks now, so tight it felt like he was carrying a heavy weight everywhere he went, and he knew Katara felt it too, the same quiet concern etched into the soft lines around her eyes when she watched their little boy.
Everyone they spoke to, parents who’d raised multiple children, older couples who’d seen it all kept telling them it was normal. “Kids suck their thumbs until they’re five, even older sometimes,” they’d say with gentle smiles, trying to ease their minds. “Bumi’s only four, there’s nothing to fret over.”
But Aang couldn’t shake the feeling. He knew his son, knew how bright, how lively, how energetic he’d always been, even as a tiny baby. This wasn’t just a harmless habit. It was different, deeper, something that twisted at his heart every time he looked at Bumi.

She does not need spiritual retreats, or quiet getaways, or any of this foolishness designed to soothe fragile minds. She has a police force. She has a city to protect and clean of corruption. She has built her legacy with her own two hands, stone by stone, arrest by arrest. She did not claw her way up to where she is today just to be defined by her last name, or by who her mother was. She is Lin Beifong, and she made it here on her own merit, not by luck, not by favor, and certainly not by being soft.
“I cannot believe I actually agreed to this,” she mutters under her breath, jaw tight, as the boat finally glides toward the dock. Ember Island. The famous retreat of the Fire Nation. “Some Kyoshi girls recommended this place when it was first starting up,” Suki says. “I try to go whenever I’m in the city. There’s live performances and themed nights, and they tend to pour heavy. It’s always lots of fun.”
Toph smirks at a detail unshared. “Just a primer because I know you’re prissy: it’s kinda dingey, but I think it’s charming. Just give it some time for the atmosphere to sink in. It’ll be great.”
In the midst of it, Katara closes her eyes and pictures herself. In this dream, she is self-assured and confident. Stronger. She pictures the bar women with cropped hair and leather boots. Then the dancers, traversing between feminine and masculine, their plumes, their sparkle.
She imagines Aang, comfortable in his body. She imagines him proud.
…AU where Kataang come out to each other in their 30s, as butch and femme lesbians.

“You always do this,” Katara whispered. She hoped he could hear the hurt there, riding the waves of her voice.
She hoped he could sense the anger there too, the same that had her clenching her hands into tight fists.
She also hoped he wasn’t looking at her; she didn’t want him to see the tears that were balancing precariously on her lashes.
“I don’t have a choice.” Aang’s voice sounded bitter, a caustic edge she’d rarely heard from him surprising her as it cut into her heart.

Aang doesn’t come out of his fight with Ozai unscathed. He should’ve known he wouldn’t be able to hide it from Katara.
