They talked about Laurel a lot. They used words like ‘grooming’ and ‘manipulation’ and that was usually all he could listen to before he had to turn away. They didn’t know her like he had, she was kind. She had meant what she said, that she loved him even if he was a monster. He needed her. (She was everything to him, the only person to see him and still love him, with her pretty eyes and blank stare and black braids and-)
Days like this ended with anger and an abrupt change from boy to monster. The doctors couldn’t figure out what the trigger was.
