Summary
“I heard somethin’ that another kid said to one of the grown ups.” Luffy shovels a few bites into his mouth, still hesitant to ask, even if Makino always answers his questions. She even goes to other people if she doesn’t know just so she can tell him. It helps with the empty feeling.
Makino hums softly, carding her fingers through Luffy’s tangled wavy hair. She pulls out a few small pieces and begins to make a small braid by his ear, unbothered by the stretching silence. Once she finishes it off with a tiny red rubber band, she tucks it into the rest of his hair to hide it. It’s not the first time she’s done this, but Luffy still doesn’t know what they're for either. “Do you want to ask about the thing you heard?”
Luffy’s plate is already empty by the time he looks up, nose scrunched up in a way that makes wrinkles across his small face, “What does ‘I love you’ mean?”
Luffy's been a lonely child since Garp left him in Foosha, his strength and oddities scaring others away within the first day. When Makino notices, she reaches out to him and quickly begins to love him as her own son.
This can be read as a stand alone fic without any affiliation with the AU.

Summary
In the aftermath of the raid on Onigashima everything changes.
Luffy is hearing the voice of a god, and he wants it out of his head but has difficulty opening up to his friends about his fear. Kid takes on new crew members, and puts his ego aside to find a cure for his first mate while Law searches for a new path forward after his long-time goal becomes a memory.
Buggy the Clown struggles to be something more than a figurehead while the rest of Cross Guild plots to change the world and Smoker and Tashigi find themselves unable to bear the hypocrisy of the Marines and the World Government any longer.
Yamato, O-kiku, Otama, and the lost princess of Wano each find that they have been overtaken by the call of the sea, reaching beyond the shores of their homeland.
The path to the One Piece is a course that can only be charted by those who agree to join together as friends and fight without taking the easy way out.
