Ravi’s been, maybe, sort of, glancing over towards the guy in apartment 4D since he moved in a few weeks ago, and Ravi's, possibly, noticed a few things. Like one, he keeps the weirdest hours. Sometimes, he catches the guy coming home when Ravi's on his way to work in the morning; bleary eyed and reeking of alcohol and bad choices. Two, he likes to hook up with people. Like, a lot of people. There are people coming and going from his place almost every other day, sometimes in groups, knocking on his door and laughing loudly as 4D invites them in to his place. There are shrieks, shouts, screams; thumps and yelps and noises from 4D that Ravi doesn’t want to think about too much. And three –
Three, the guy’s a father.
And his daughter is adorable.

They’re fine. Chris was at the movies with Paco, and they’ll probably go to a nearby park or something after. Abuela doesn’t go to the beach anymore since that seagull nearly took her snow cone from her hands, and Pepa hates clearing out sand from her shoes. They were out having a nice, normal day together. Everything’s fine. It’s all okay.
But still. His fingers finish typing his message.

The kid’s face, stoney and blank and expressionless, suddenly blinks to life. His eyes are wide, hat pulled down on his head and his mouth parts before closing again. Can’t be more than fifteen, sixteen. Sullen but hopeful at the same time. Couldn’t care less but curious nonetheless. Howard reaches over, hand stretched out.
“I’m Howie, it’s nice to meet you.”
The kid stares at him for a moment, his parents watching them both cautiously.
It takes a moment. Makes him nervous that he’s upset him somehow; done the wrong thing, said the wrong words. But then, after a few seconds, the kid reaches his hand out, and Howie… Howie holds it gently, squeezes once before pulling away.
“I’m Ravi.”
