I nod, my mouth dry with apprehension.
“I wanted to introduce you to your new bodyguards.”
He glances over my shoulder, and I turn around. Three people stand behind me, motionless. Their eyes fixed ahead, they keep their hands behind their backs and don't bat an eyelid, even as I size them up. I hadn't seen them when I entered the room, too preoccupied with my father. A transparent earpiece sticks out of their right ears and disappears under the collars of their dark shirts. Standing like that, they look like statues carved from black marble. My attention is drawn to one of them, on the far left of the trio, whose face looks familiar.
