Summary

“...or maybe I’m just an idiot,” Stede groans to himself, scraping burnt eggplant skins off the baking sheet for the third time, dumping the blackened aubergine into the garbage and tossing the tray unceremoniously into the sink.
What had he been thinking? That he could make something like this for Ed? Because it’s something his mother had made? The bar would have to be impossibly high for him to enjoy it, surely. So why—
Even within his own mind, his stream of consciousness collides heavily with a solid, undeniable, unavoidable wall.
Because his mother loved him, Stede thinks. And he loved her. Even if neither of them could say it.
Stede can’t change the past; he can’t fix Ed’s childhood or take away the hurt. But maybe he can bring him back to one of those few, shining, positive moments. Because…
(Why is it so hard to say, even in the privacy of his own mind, he wonders.)
