“You didn’t get a Gift?” Cecilia asked quietly, looking suddenly near tears.
Bruno shrugged. “Nope,” he said.
Sierra looked between Bruno, Mirabel and the mural. “If I was you, I’d be really sad,” she said.
Mirabel tried not to wince. Kids were often sweet, but also very very blunt.
If it had been Mirabel, she would have made light of it. She would have tried to distract the kids with a joke or reassure them that of course she wasn’t sad.
But Tio Bruno only stared blankly at the mural for one long moment. He turned to the kids and shrugged again with a wry smile.
“You get used to it,” he said.

In this world, the Gifts are all different, but you know how the old saying goes: this changes everything and nothing at all. Mirabel may have a Gift, but Bruno doesn't and Isabela is hiding a major secret in a desperate attempt to protect everyone.

Mirabel had been born the day her hermana and prima disappeared. Mamá said the stress had sent her into early labour and she had been born many weeks premature, tiny and sickly and unsure if she would live. Her Mamá had told her one day, after Mirabel had asked why she always looked so sad on her birthday, noticing such even as such a young child. Everyone looked sad on Mirabel’s birthday, but Mirabel vowed that one day they wouldn’t. One day, everyone would be happy on her birthday.
One day, Mirabel promised herself, only five years old and sitting on her crying Mamá’s hip, as Luisa sniffled from Papá’s arms, as Tío Bruno begged for a vision to show him a happy ending, as Abuela whispered beneath her breath for another miracle to bless their family, as cold rain fell upon them, one day Mirabel would find Isabela and Dolores, and she would bring them home.
