Summary
Slowly, Lan Jue traces the petal-style rim of an enameled bowl with his thumb. Outside it is still light outside, the sun only starting to set. The dulling daylight washes over Lan Jue’s bright robes, so that he gleams like a pearl in the unlit room. All of his movements are smooth, deliberate as a courtesan’s – he has trained himself to be immaculate at all times. It makes Zhang Ping itchy, sometimes, his perfection. He wants to rumple him, to wrinkle his clothes and tangle his hair. To see Lan Jue streaked in flour, smelling of warm dough.
Or: Two years after the red mist descended, Lan Jue visits Yiping to assess its magistrate. He finds precisely what he was looking for.

Summary
Xie Zheng was reading documents when Fan Chang Ning burst into the room like a small, violent storm.
“Jiefu! I figured out romance,” she announced.
He blinked and immediately rolled up whatever he was reading like a guilty official hiding corruption evidence. “You figured what out?”
“You’re doing it wrong,” she said, climbing into the chair across from him and kneeling on it like a general planning a war. “You can’t just stand there and look at my sister like a sad ghost.”
“I am not a sad ghost.”
She ignored that. “Do you like my sister?” she asked bluntly.
Xie Zheng felt like someone had just shoved an entire pig leg down his throat.
“I… I…” he scrambled for an answer, suddenly finding the table extremely interesting.
His silence was answered by Chang Ning’s slow, smug grin—the kind only small children and very dangerous politicians possess.
“I have a plan,” she announced.

“Jiefu,” she said abruptly, without taking her eyes off the cage, but waiting for Xie Zheng’s welcoming hum, “if he likes me one day, can I keep him?”
His hands paused in their whittling.
“No.”
“Why not?” she asked stubbornly. Xie Zheng almost expected it, really.
But what could he tell her, honestly? How could he explain without destroying the delicate structure of lies upon lies that he had been building here?
“Because he is a gyrfalcon, not a pet,” he answered in the end, going with something simple and hoping she would drop it, his hands moving again but losing their finesse.
But, of course, Changning trampled all over that perfect plan.
She huffed. “You don’t know. Maybe he wants a family. Maybe he wants to stay.”
“He does not want to stay,” he said evenly, carefully not looking at his falcon lying all cozy in his nest of a cage to avoid feeling like a liar. Before he could stop himself, he added more quietly, “He wants to fly home.”
Xie Zheng swallowed, trying to focus on his almost-done chopstick, while his thoughts and emotions were racing.
Why did it suddenly feel like that they weren’t just talking about the bird anymore?

Clad in dark robes embroidered with the finest gold thread, midnight hair tied up and adorned with a golden guan, he exuded an authority so absolute that no one dared mistake his position. His posture was flawless, his expression composed and unreadable.
Even in relaxation, he seemed like a dangerous predator, ready to strike.
And his gaze, when falling on a low-ranking official like him, was bone-chilling.
