“Well,” began Mala, “the dragon Astrid Hofferson has encountered is called an Oviplanter. Meaning it plants its eggs inside a host. We think it’s because it doesn’t have a fire, so the body isn’t warm enough to incubate the eggs. It seeks out a female mammal and implants the eggs in the uterus.”
“So…how do we get them out?” Hiccup asked.
“It can be tricky, but you do have options. The eggs will need to digest a certain amount of protein to develop. They usually get this protein from the uterine lining. It doesn’t matter where the eggs get the protein, so instead of relying on the uterine lining, simply give them a more accessible source. Semen is an excellent replacement protein. Two or three doses should do the job. With such a high concentration, the eggs develop in only a few days and are birthed at least two weeks before they hatch. That gives you time to get them back to that island before they hatch.”
“Semen,” Hiccup finally said.
“Yes.”
“As in…sex?”
“That is the easiest way. The host usually goes into heat from the hormones injected by the Oviplanter’s stinger, so intercourse is often the outcome anyway.”
