Summary
The circle of L’s fingers around his wrist is beginning to burn. He wants him to let go. Why hasn’t he let go? Why won’t he let go, let Light be free of this awful thing he’s done to him? Wanting, more than captivity, more than chains, binds him here. Light thinks he’s beginning to understand the desperation that drives a fox to gnaw off its own leg when caught in a trap.
His hands, damp with sweat and saliva and vomit, clutch at his hair. He feels himself screaming before he hears it, and he knows he must look frantic as he turns toward L.
L, who is smiling.
It’s an expression Light has never seen before, one that feels foreign and ill-fitting on L’s face. His smile has always been jarring; a thin-lipped, wide-eyed thing, often close-mouthed and smug. This is something else entirely. Something hungry. His eyes are half-shut, and Light can see his teeth as it wobbles across his face.
“I like it when your mask comes off, Light-kun.”
