he meets annabeth chase at knifepoint, she is brilliant and confusing and has spent years building a life in a city that everyone seems to leave. her version of running is watching everyone else go.
he's two hours from admitting this was an awful idea and buying a return ticket home when he accidentally finds himself as her fake boyfriend before either of them can correct the situation, and suddenly leaving is more complicated than staying.

The thought had barely formed before Lottie leaned in and pressed her tongue, slow and deliberate, to the exact spot she’d pointed to.

So, Carol was fine. She was fine and the fact that she repeated that constantly, a mantra in her head, probably should have raised some red flags, but it didn't.
She published her books under her pen name, taught at the university, and did not let an unhinged graduate student blow up her life. Just for the fuck of it, it seemed like.
