“Gem—Slayer—wait, one last thing.” The words that left Pearl’s mouth were desperate, though she wasn’t sure why. There wasn’t much else to discuss now, but she couldn’t stand the thought of Slayer leaving. Something about her company, as cold and formal and unfriendly as it was, comforted her.
Slayer paused. “What is it?”
Pearl crossed the room in a few strides until she and Slayer were barely a foot apart. Pearl was taller than Slayer, but the heeled boots that Slayer wore gave her a boost. They were so close that Pearl could see the other’s breath hover in the cold night air that blew in from the window. As her eyes flickered over Slayer’s visage once again, drinking in every visible detail, she knew what her mouth had realized before her brain had.

The man hovering over him leaned back, releasing Grian completely. Cold night air rushed in to fill the void.
“I guess it’s out in the open now,” the stranger hummed. “Shame. I wanted to avoid this.”
With the additional glow occupying the space between them, Grian was finally able to catch features that were lost in the prior darkness. His curiosity outweighed all else, and he drank them in greedily. As soon as he saw who sat across from him, alarms blared in his mind.
This man wasn’t a civilian, wasn’t even a hero.
“Hello, Doctor,” the villain mused. “You were quite the help today.”
