Gaping, Clara tries to think of something to say, anything at all, a stuttered apology at the very least. She thinks that maybe, somehow, something witty or attractive will come out of her mouth, but all she ends up doing is staring like a deer caught in headlights.
After an agonizingly long moment of silence, he asks, in the witty manner she wishes she could have voiced, “What? What are you looking at? Take a picture, it’ll last longer.”
The words come out as a delayed reaction, Clara’s desperation to break her silence mixed with her nervous motor mouth, creating a demon spawn of embarrassing blurting, “Can I? That would actually be really great.”

The final curtain had fallen twice in the theater of Georgia aka George's Ambrose’s life. The first time—it was nothing more than an innocuous plastic stick branded with two mocking purple lines. The second arrived not long after, the world taking a bow to nuclear fire. An intermission from which society never returned from the bathroom or bothered to bring back any non-irradiated snacks from the concession stand. Who would’ve guessed she’d prefer the leveling of society over the fallout of motherhood and her life before the big sleep?
