Summary
Robin has a full-ride academic scholarship to Wellesley, and Nancy couldn't be happier. They keep in close contact, and Nancy brings Robin out to Emerson parties in the city. When she stumbles in on Robin and another girl one night, it has devastating consequences for both their friendship and Nancy's perception of the world, including her own sexuality. "Hey," Robin said conspiratorially, looking down at Nancy. Another flashback. They hadn't been this close since the Upside Down, she thought. She didn't miss that, but she kind of missed this. "You want to get out of here?"
"Um, excuse me?" Nancy laughed, blushing, and Robin immediately regretted speaking, which was not an unfamiliar feeling for her. Just clumsy, every which way.
"No! I just meant, you know, like 'Let's blow this popsicle stand,'" Robin said, gesturing in a way incomprehensible even to her.

Nancy was walking through town on a Wednesday afternoon, taking a break from foliage in favor of reliable sidewalks after getting run into a ditch by a speeding pickup truck the previous day, when she noticed a familiar figure leaning over the counter at Family Video, and she had let herself get so used to letting her feet make her choices that she found she'd walked into the store before she had a chance to even begin to formulate a plan. If she had planned it, she might not have come in at all. She was off plans, these days, she reminded herself.

"Gross, dude," Robin muttered, but she was distracted by Nancy, who was evidently distracted by a woman who had just walked into the bar. Older, mid forties maybe. Short dark hair. Conservative kind of business-y outfit. Robin didn't recognize her. She was more concerned at the moment with the furrow in Nancy's brow, and the urge to press her thumb just there to smooth it out. "Hey. Steve," Nancy said, eyes not leaving the woman at the bar. "How about you try... spreading the Gospel, I guess... to her?" She gestured at the woman. "She's one of Owens' people. Agent... Stinson I think. She's obviously off-duty, she might be open to it?"
