Perhaps it could be said that Draco Malfoy was a petty person; however, if you were to ask him, he would deny that, and simply tell you he adored his fiancée.
What he would admit to was that he could hold a grudge like no one else. See Exhibit A, the near beheading of that overgrown chicken, Buckbeak, in third year. See Exhibit B, what happened exactly forty-seven days after Viktor Krum had loudly proclaimed that his fiancée, goddess that she was, was nothing more than a common gold digger.

Summary
When Draco stumbles upon a particularly nasty curse at work, Hermione's Friday evening plans suddenly go from a hot bath and a good book to staying late to help research a countercurse.
But Draco's ache only grows as the evening goes on. The pain and agony won't relent.
So Hermione offers to help him out. After all, it's what any good colleague would do.

“I dare one of you nitwits to read the note.” Draco Malfoy said from the back of the classroom twenty minutes into silence.
Ron snickered and Hermione immediately snapped, “No.”
That, however, caught Ron’s attention. “Does it say why you're in here?” He asked his friend and Hermione avoided his eye again. It totally did, he realized.
He needed to respect her privacy. That’s what Harry would do. Harry would never listen to Malfoy-
“It says what I did to deserve a time out, too.” Malfoy called. Ron couldn’t care less about why Malfoy was in detention. So he ignored that comment and watched Hermione.
She glanced at him, “Seriously, Ron. I don’t want it read- it’s silly, stupid even.”

Sirius had spent too many nights soothing Hermione's nightmares without any hope of doing more than offering her false assurances that none would ever harm her again.
Tonight he would ensure that all those who had harmed the woman he loved, all those who escaped the Minister's Justice, would never harm another.
He had to be careful and calculated, but thankfully, Sirius knew a thing or two about smiling at the monsters who sat across from him at the dinner table.
