“Am I speaking with Ilya Grigorievich Rozanov?”

Ilya went silent immediately. That was not his brother’s voice. Nor was it Katia’s, his sister-in-law’s. It was an aristocratic, cold voice. He went completely still.

    “Yes.”

“I’m calling from the Child Services Department, Ilya Grigorievich,” the woman continued, and Ilya frowned deeply. “Your brother Alexei Rozanov and his wife died yesterday in a car accident.”

Twice in his life, Ilya had felt like this. The ice around his heart melted just enough for the numbness to vanish and give way to a sharp, stinging pain. It lasted only two seconds before he managed to compose himself. He didn’t want to feel anything for Alexei, so even if Katia’s death carried a trace of sadness—she was a mess, but she always tried to smile at him and cook warm meals for him when he visited Russia—, he dismissed the feeling entirely.

    “So what?”

“You are the only living family member of their daughter. Your brother named you as her legal guardian, Ilya Grigorievich.”

    Summary

Upon arrival at the coliseum, Shane finds himself a place he can watch the bulls run from beneath the stadium seating. He perches on a metal fence, his gym shoed feet digging into the bottom rung, his breeches and polo standing out amongst the spurs and chaps and cowboy hats, and he just… watches. He watches the men who grit their teeth and hug their thighs against these raging machines, watches as their tenacity and determination propel them forward. Shane gets caught up in it, and cheers when appropriate, whistles with his two fingers in his mouth when the men do well. He’s only aware of someone else on the fence beside him when he hears a soft chuckle.

“Do you like what you see?” a sultry voice puckered with a Russian accent surprises him, and Shane steps off the gate to look at the man who’s approached him. Hazel eyes and golden brown curls assault his senses, and Shane’s breath catches at the man’s beauty. The denim he’s clad in only offsets his tanned skin, and Shane takes him in from the tip of his tawny cowboy hat to the brown leather spurs that hug his heels.

“I can’t come to Waterdeep and see an old friend?”

Gale hesitated as he closed up his bag and swung it over his shoulder. He wanted, briefly, to say something unkind. But she was as she’d always been — sand through his fingers, impossible to hold.

“It’s been some time,” he said instead.

    Summary

While it might be juicy gossip, who the emotionally unavailable widower of nearly two decades Dr. Jack Abbot is seeing on the sly, he's not the type to be the subject of such fodder. He warrants a sort of respect and awed intimidation from most of the staff that he isn't close with, even though Samira could tell very easily just how warm-hearted and dorky he is most of the time.

Except for right now, when he finally responds to her text with a simple Make sure you charge that tonight, sweetheart. I expect the proof I was promised. I'll be over by 7:30.

The message sends a rush of heat through her body, settling in her nether regions that she can't touch because of him. She could be bratty and say something about how she never technically promised him anything, how it's clearly a comment that he's taken to extreme levels of fantasy fulfillment, but. It's not like she was lying when she said it.

Samira just has a lot of time on her hands when she's not working, okay?
