Kennedy wrinkled her nose as he dished a slice of pizza onto her plate, “Why?”
“I’m an admiral. Captain Mitchell and Lt. Bradshaw were under my command when they were hurt. They performed their missions well and admirably,’ despite being pains in my ass, he thought uncharitably to himself, ‘and they were med-evac’d out last week, off the aircraft carrier. I had to be in meetings last week, but I need to go see them tomorrow. It’s part of being a good leader.”
“Are they going to look gross?”
“Kennedy!”
Sloane sighed and spoke to her sister. “People who get hurt in combat are to be honored, Kennedy. They never look gross.”
Beau took a bite of his pizza, “Exactly.”
Sloane looked at her dad. “So are they burned?”
He stared at her for a long moment, then spoke. “No. No, they’re not burned. Relax. Both of you."

This probably wouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, but he and Seresin hadn’t exactly hit it off when they first met. That said, they did hit it off eventually, and they did it with a bang so resounding it probably should’ve devolved into a fist fight.
By the end of the week, Bradley realized there was one small potential problem with the first close friendship he’d managed in years: he thought Jake was beautiful.
