Summary
The form of himself begins and ends in the boundless dark. The rot begins from the inside out, invisible and malignant, as it always does. This, at least, is a weight he’s used to.
He shuts his eyes. Nothing changes. Have they always been open? When he moves to press his fingertips to his eyelids, his skin has bloomed into ash. Painlessly gone. Like there was nothing there to begin with. Has it always been this easy?
I’m only borrowing you. Don’t get too comfortable, the stranger interrupts. It’s nice, though, isn’t it?
He doesn’t dignify it with a response.
Don’t you feel so much lighter without all your little curses? Without your body?

Summary
Focus is lost on him, getting heated with every word. Kyojuro could pretend that it’s from all the sweat drenching him, could pretend that it’s the fatigue that turns his legs shaky, but he’s spent one too many nights with the upper moon to know that’s not exactly the case.
That is his mistake, clearly, because Akaza takes the split second opening to reach his open hand to Kyojuro’s neck, squeezing around the soft flesh of his neck.
Kyojuro’s blood rushes south.
Ah.
That’s not the correct reaction when his life is quite literally in the hands of an upper moon.

“Nanako,” she starts, hesitantly, twirling a loose thread between her fingers. She’s seen days when Geto-san would skip meals, where his form wasn't as full with a soft edge to them, limbs thin and hair messy and eyebags heavy. So her concerns only grow. “Do you think Geto-san’s sick?”
“Don’t worry about that.”
“Why?”
“Well, obviously”—Nanako holds up a finger, confidence flashing behind her grin—“Geto-san’s just pregnant.”
(Or: Suguru came home ill. Mimiko and Nanako came to the wrong conclusion.)

Summary
To his surprise, Kyojuro doesn't sleep as deeply as he thought he would. On one night the elder Rengoku had taken his hand, gentler than Obanai thought he would, guided him to the engawa and down the steps to the grass, to lie down and talk about nothing and everything, until sleep embraced them and they woke up with Senjuro's shadow cast over them by the sunrise.
It's become somewhat of a habit. This night is no different.

One, after another, after another, after another, after another, like there was no end to them, like this was some kind of nightmarish buffet with no cost, no limit, his hands fumbled messily and he felt his palm mash against his teeth, sometimes a spare dripping or tendril would lash acidly against his cheek or burn a line down his chin, and still he kept eating and eating and eating, nauseous with the grease of swallowed blood, and it took him a long time, too long, to realize this was not some terrible dream, or an exaggerated memory, or even hell. He was simply still alive.
