“Have you frightened them all away?” he whispers to the okuri-okami, lowering his bow and letting its knocked arrow point to the earth. Ominously, the dark centers of the wolf's pale eyes roll up to meet his stare. “Only you are allowed to eat me? Is that it?”
It gives no answer, of course. Suguru smiles, nevertheless grateful for the company—for no other ghastly, beastly resident of these woods would dare interlope on the okuri-okami’s marked hunt and steal its prey.
Which is Suguru, apparently.
While fleeing the Zen’in clan, Suguru takes up shelter in the shadow of an abandoned shrine, deep within forests said to crawl with all manner of monster. Soon enough, he finds himself with a strange, nightly companion: a great white wolf as liable to devour him as protect him.

Satoru is warned not to give the fox his name. He does. It’s only a matter of time before he surrenders his heart, too.
As their time together accumulates, Satoru finds himself asking questions no legend ever bothered to answer: is grief another name for love? And if so, why does Suguru choose it twice?

Then the track slipped into something else. A subtle shift that would have been easy to miss if you weren’t listening with intention. Underneath the main rhythm, a whispered layer began to surface—a faint, breathy ad‑lib that seemed to echo the timbre of Suguru’s voice, the same cadence that had haunted Satoru’s thoughts all night.
“Ah-”
“Fuck!”
“Mmh-”
Choso’s eyes narrowed, then widened. He leaned forward, elbows planted on his knees, his focus sharpening like a camera lens pulling into focus. “No way,” he muttered, the words barely leaving his lips.
