"Everyone who knew the two of them before notices there’s been a change between them, even if they can’t quite put their finger on what it is. They whisper in the back of classrooms, using words and phrases no one else can understand, and shoot matching glares at anyone trying to eavesdrop. They defend each other, fighting tooth and nail at the smallest insult, but only in ways that can never be properly explained to a teacher or get them sent to the principal’s office. They tell lies for each other with sincere convincing faces, and don’t even feel a little bit bad about it afterward.

Or, the Pines Twins leave Gravity Falls at the end of the summer, fundamentally changed, and come back to a city where everything has stayed exactly the same. They'll need each other's support and understanding now more than ever.

Despite being the one to initiate the conversation, Robbie is very suddenly self conscious. He looks down, picking at his nails, painted black (and slightly chipped from this very habit he has). They’re just nails. Guys paint their nails all the time, even. He’s not the first to do it. It’s a very common trend in some aesthetic circles, and he’s in those circles. For some reason, though, looking at them makes him even more self conscious, so he looks back up at Wendy again.
“Do you think I’m, like.” He makes a face. “Girly?”
Wendy snorts, then busts out laughing. “Dude,” she says, “what?”

Madison steps up to the Wendy’s counter. “Can I get two double stacks? No pickles.”
The girl at the counter stares at her. Madison stares back. There is dried blood above her eye, clinging to her eyebrow, and it’s starting to itch. So is the gash on the front of her shoulder, beneath the tear in her shirt, which sucks, because she really liked this one. The girl at the counter still doesn’t say anything. Her name tag reads Violet. Madison blinks.
“Can I—”
“Two double stacks, no pickles,” Violet repeats, punching her order in, still staring.
“And a chocolate frosty.” She’s earned it.
