Severus’s hands shook. He knew the chances of making it back to October 31, 1981, were low, but he had to try. The boy had claimed Voldemort was back, and that would mean there were only a few more days before the Dark Lord summoned him. He could not look at that monster anymore, not if he could not gaze into Lily’s green eyes again, not if he could no longer envy James Potter, and not if the Potter boy’s eyes looked so dead and dull. This child, born into wealth and prestige, had spent his entire life neglected because of one Monster. How was Severus to serve him for the greater good? Summary
Harry Potter was exhausted. He just wanted everything to be over, but the violence never stopped. Even with the defeat of Voldemort and coming back from the Dead, a new war arose. Dumbledore has turned everyone he's ever loved against him. So Harry throws it all away. One last sacrifice and he'd find peace.

Death isn't done with Harry yet. Forcing him back in time to 1943 Harry has to traverse the oddly similar world of Hogwarts while trying to stay committed to his new lifestyle of apathy. Screw politics. Screw power. Screw Voldemort! Except Tom Riddle seems to be taking that last suggestion seriously. Upon Harry's capture, the snatcher proudly informs Voldemort that he has erased the boy's memories. Harry decides to play along, pretending he knows nothing of the war and magic. He'll bide his time until he can escape. Voldemort has always underestimated him.
Voldemort then does something completely unexpected. He informs Harry that he is his fiancé.

The uncomfortable truth is that Harry can understand why he did it, all of it. He understands perfectly that there have always been bigger concerns than one lonely, misused boy (or two) at stake, that there is a Greater Good here the man has always been striving toward since longer than Harry's been alive. He gets it.
That doesn't make it hurt any less. It doesn't mean that Harry can forgive him either.
It doesn't mean that he can take back the way it's already changed his relationship with the man he thought was supposed to be his prophesied enemy. Or that he would want to now even if he could.
Their destiny is not to destroy each other as he once believed, although it still could be. It's more complicated than that. Their destiny is to make their own destiny, together, or be torn apart by it. He knows which one he prefers.
