Adam had seen women fall down in the streets, writhing, hair matted and eyes wild like Ronan's. His mother used to say it was a rich people's illness, but the girls in the trailer park would get sick too, kept inside for weeks at a time. Everyone in Henrietta assumed it only happened to women, except the summer of Adam's ninth birthday, a boy his age got his first bite.
Without looking up, Adam asked, "Has this happened before?"
Declan sighed. It was an absurd, relieved sigh. "It happens every year."

Finally, Sirius couldn’t stand the suspense any longer. “It can’t possibly be that bad, Moons. What happened?”
James snickered as Remus covered his face and let out an anguished groan.
James took over in Remus’s embarrassed silence. “You know how I’ve been training Moons in gentle strengthening and functional movement? To help his Ehlers-Danlos?”
“Yeah. Obviously.”
Of course Sirius knew. He was the one who sent Remus the links with the data to support the recommendations after James’s source of “trust me, bro” was, unsurprisingly, ineffective. They’d been friends for a decade and still Prongs somehow didn’t know that the best way to bend Remus to his will was to give him peer-reviewed evidence.
“Well, I advanced him from hanging flutter kicks to knee raises, and suddenly…” James twitched and gasped in an imitation of…something. If Sirius didn’t know better, he’d think it was supposed to look like he came.
“What does that mean? What are you doing?”

“Lupin didn’t seem pleased that I was filming last night,” Sirius said lightly.
“Most people that come here…” Lily spoke slowly, choosing her words carefully, “Remus put it like this to me once: most people who choose to spend years of their life so far from civilization have a reason for leaving it behind. Remus wanted someone like us and he held out for so long because he expected he would get sent a bunch of finicky artsy types. I don’t think he expected you. And now that you’re here, I don’t think he quite knows what to do with you.”
When wildlife filmmaker Sirius Black arrives on a remote Antarctic island for a year-long assignment, he isn't phased by the freezing wind, the perpetual darkness, or the hostility he meets from some of the biologists at the research base. He is used to living an itinerant existence. He is comfortable with unforgiving conditions. He expects the world to treat him harshly. But he does not expect to fall in love.

It's been two days since they got a good night's sleep, much less a moment's rest, and now that they're finally safe and ready for a nap, Sirius Black starts a fucking fight. Remus can take care of himself dammit!

"Sirius." There's this voice that Remus uses sometimes that makes Sirius feel like he's in trouble with the teacher that, most times, zips him up better than anything else. He purses his lips, irritated, and scowls at Remus from under his eyebrows. "You see with your own eyes that I'm in one piece," Remus continues, and waits until Sirius, reluctantly, minutely, nods before carrying on. "You did everything right, I promise. It would have been far worse without you there. Okay? And even worse than that if you'd had your head cracked in two."
Sirius sighs and nods again, but finds his eyes trailing down to the bruise on Remus's thigh, looking dark and painful in the dim light coming from the small overhead lamp above the stove. The fight gone out of him, his anger is impotent and grating, an itching agita at the back of his mind looking for somewhere else to go.

"Dust is dancing in the sunlight, the light filtering through the leaves and turning everything sunny yellow. It shines off Remus’ pale skin and makes him look even more pallid in comparison to the others. James is back from a holiday in some muggle town, tanned and skinny and grinning; brimming over with tales of hot local birds and the things they let him do to them on the beach. Sirius was with him too, he knows, but he is nowhere near as vocal in his boasting. He just lounges back against the tree, eyes heavy-lidded and smiling at nothing, last minute reading for McGonagall’s class balanced over his face as he drifts off in the summer heat."
Remus is stressed, tired and in love with his best friend. All he wants is for things to work out ok, and for an explaination as to all the paper birds that seem to be following him everywhere he goes.

He keeps coming back to meet more people.... well, to see James and Sirius, really, a charming duo working at the agency itself. Not that he can be matched with any of them. Not that he can stop himself from dreaming about it.
