A beat of silence passes. When Wriothesley looks up again, Neuvillette’s expression has noticeably relaxed. The barely-there hint of a smile looks beautiful in the dim light of his office.
“I am most grateful for your invitation, Your Grace, and I would happily accept,” he says.
Wriothesley had not expected that answer. He blinks. “Really?”
“Of course,” Neuvillette says, amusement creeping into his tone. “The event happens to fall during a lighter period of activity here at the Palais Mermonia. A happy coincidence. I can be free for the evening.”
The Fortress of Meropide comes together for a scrap-up celebration of White Day—a grander event than any they've hosted before. Wriothesley invites Neuvillette, and the night proceeds in a way that he is not at all expecting.

And now he's undergoing treatment, and his true gender is beginning to emerge. And then... Neuvillette, smelling his new scent, breaks off all contact with him and refuses to see him. Does the Chief Justice hate his scent so much? It hurts.

Wriothesley stumbled in surprise and almost flew down the stairs. "Archons, Clorinde, and you too!" he stopped and turned sharply towards her. "Or are you all in this together? Why are you all calling this a date?"
"What should we call it?"
"A meeting! It was a working meeting!"
"Ah," Clorinde nodded, "the Chief Justice gave you the file. And it took a whole dinner by candlelight in a fancy restaurant to do that?"
Wriothesley is certain that his soulmark is not mutual. So he rejects his soulmate's advances.
