She tried to think about anything else.
The colours on the street as it whizzed past, people walking by in groups and chatting. God, she missed her friends so much. Missed Max. She counted how many times the car had rattled from a divot in the road, Mrs Byers cursing under her breath. How much hotter it was in California at this time of year, even though she hadn't been there for very long at all yet. The fact that she was in a real school now, even though it had only been about 3 weeks since she started. Her first letters from Mike filtering in, how she was due another on Monday.
El tried to focus on anything else. Anything but the boy sat to her left and the painfully awkward silence enveloping them.
OR :
Will and El are taken to the mall by Joyce to buy whatever they want while she waits and eats in the food hall. They navigate it together. (and maybe become friends along the way, too)

Summary
There's a defining moment in which they become one family.
It's as if it was inevitable, their fates intertwined. Of course they would blend eventually, Will thinks, with his Mom and Hoppers romantic ties becoming more and more obvious. It was just a matter of when their household would gain two more.
He just never thought that a death would be the final push.

Robin stops in her tracks and damn near drops her flashlight. “Huh?”
Just a step ahead of her, Will winces, stopping and turning back to look at Robin. His brow is furrowed together, and there’s an earnest expression on his face. “I won’t tell anyone,” he repeats, softer this time. “About… about you and that girl.”

When Will walks in on Robin and Vickie at the hospital, Robin takes the opportunity to have a heart-to-heart with the younger teen.

Summary
On November 6, 1983, Will Byers vanished. On November 12, he was rescued by the wrong people.
Sometimes he wondered if he’d have been better off staying in the Upside Down.
A Season 1 AU in which Will is not saved, he is simply taken from one hell to another. At Hawkins Lab, his new prison, he endures unthinkable torture and develops skills he never could have imagined.
