Sometimes he thinks he can hear the walls of the prison straining against the weight of the water pressing down around it, sheet metal twisting and buckling, bolts popping off under the strain, shrieking metal that sounds almost human.

Everything was just awful. Sure, she was a necromantic saint, but God Himself, the source of her authority, had been a useless, miserable sack ever since his last two duplicitous sluts had betrayed him. And all that work trying to suck up to Augustine had gone down the drain much as her mentor had gone down the stoma of the River to who-knows-where. Certainly not God.
Everything was not turning up Ianthe. But then things had rarely ever turned up Ianthe until she’d forced them to.

Even in his imagination, Klavier never answered.
