(Or: Dream and George broke up right before graduation, and after almost a decade apart, Dream finally returns home. Laying in the silence of his own room, listening to nothing but the scathing thoughts of his sleep deprived brain, it was surprisingly easy to pick out the sound of soft laughter — two voices speaking. George listened to the way an extra pair of feet followed Dream down the corridor. He listened to the way they disappeared behind a closed door.
Oh.
There was a weird feeling that came with figuring it out, a sort of sinking feeling that makes him want to lie on his bedroom floor and pray that the carpet would consume him. Part of him wishes he never knew. Maybe it would have been easier living with the idea of things possibly working out between them. Maybe it would have been easier to live believing that what Dream was doing was for him, and only him. But part of him is glad he knows. Part of him is thankful that he doesn't have to make a fool of himself trying to chase someone he’s always wanted, but will never have.
Being in love with your best friend gets more complicated when they start sleeping with other people, especially when the people they bring home look like you.
