Gogol glanced back at the blood. The thought of laying in it danced in his head. He could make snow angels—blood angels! He could soak his clothes so much one couldn’t imagine the original color.
What a trivially easy way to prove free will. Let the lukewarm blood of someone you killed seep into your clothes and permanently change the color.
Who would willingly let that happen? What person could wait for the feeling of blood through their clothes? What person could let that happen and live with the guilt, over and over, every time they see the clothes, even if they could wash out the blood?

After faking his death, Gogol is left in a room with half of a corpse--with the person he killed. While in this room and planning his escape, he battles with his ocd.

Summary
Poe receives a letter from the leader of the Guild; there is a new mission that he is requested to join them on. This mission will take the Guild to Japan, the home of Poe's nemesis. Upon realizing this, Poe goes over his history with Ranpo and practices his speech for when they meet again. Karl is forced to listen.
