Summary
Connie didn't like being alone. She liked books, she liked journals, she liked the sound of her pencil as she tapped it in rhythm to the song playing over her radio. She liked dancing when no one was watching and she liked picking apart shitty movies because she had nothing better to do at 3 am. She liked all the things that came with being alone except the very idea of it.
Being alone for some people meant a sense of peace before the long day ahead. Being alone for Connie meant a permanent punishment. She had to wonder what kind of contract she signed that elicited being stuck in her room with nothing but the sound of her own voice drowning out the stress. She learned to work through thick and thin and she'd like to think she did just fine. It didn't bother her much when everyone else went to Prom while she stayed at home rereading The Unfamiliar Familiar for the umpteenth time. To other people, that sounded extremely lame, but to Connie that was incredibly cool. She never worried about what other people had to say about her because they were completely irrelevant.

Even this is unusual. In the Before, they’d always known everything about each other, from food preferences to idol biases.
Sasha is no stranger to confessions. This time, it’d been an eighth grader from the middle school department, a boy with fluffy red hair and freckles. He was cute , she admits, but in the same way a fad fashion trend or lost raccoon was. Not pretty, like the Perseids, Anne’s smile, or Marcy’s rambles. Sasha is… a selfish person. She was too cowardly to confess, so she went for the next best thing.
Did you like it? On that, Sasha contemplates. Going on a date with a random person to fill a void was not something a nice girl did. Sasha has long known she is far from a nice girl. Nice girls don’t steal.
