Summary
Tommy lowered his phone and stared at it after the nurse from his Nonna’s hospice facility hung up. His eyes prickled, tears forming but not falling as his gaze blurred over the black screen. He traced the smudges of his own fingerprints as he tried to keep the tears at bay. The nurse’s words echoed in his ears, still not quite sinking in.
Tommy had woken up early, intending to make breakfast so that Evan could eat as soon as he got off shift. He’d been in the midst of pouring himself a cup of coffee when his phone rang, displaying “Nonna – Hospice” as he’d saved the facility’s number in his phone. “Go for Kinard,” he’d said, not yet awake enough to remember that he was answering a phone not his radio at work.

Summary
The only good thing about this entire situation was how good Evan looked in a suit, Tommy mused as they climbed out of their Uber in front of the church steps. Tommy paused to admire his boyfriend’s long legs and broad shoulders, which probably wasn’t the most appropriate thing to be doing immediately before his grandmother’s funeral, but Tommy was only human.
“You good?” Evan asked, buttoning his suit jacket and smoothing his hands down his thighs.
“Nervous?” Tommy asked in order to avoid answering.
“Well, I am technically meeting your family today,” said Evan. He squared his shoulders and eyed the church as though it were a five-alarm fire.

Summary
Tommy Kinard is dating Evan "Buck" Buckley. They're even going to a wedding together in a few weeks. Tommy's excited about this new relationship, if a little nervous. But Tommy has a good feeling about Evan, and he wants to see this through.
EXCERPT:
“Wait, so if you’re not here to hang out with Eddie, who are you hanging out with?” asked Hen.
Tommy.
Heard the thud of someone falling down from the firetruck. And there, on the floor, faceplanted and looking drained of all energy, was Evan Buckley.
“Evan?” asked Tommy.

Summary
Tommy Kinard's life changes for the better when his old friend Chimney calls him out of the blue for help on a rescue and he meets the adorably awkward Evan "Buck" Buckley.
EXCERPT:
Was this man looking down to see the hand or – no. No. Tommy knew it couldn’t be checking out. That wasn’t happening here.
The guy took Tommy’s hand and shook it. Kept shaking it as he said, “Evan! Evan Buckley. Or Buck. Whatever you, uh. Want to call me is fine.”
And it wouldn’t hurt to be a little friendly, could it? Evan didn’t seem to mind as Tommy leaned only a touch closer, looking into the man’s unwavering eyes as Tommy asked, “Are you sure you don’t have a preference, Evan?”
That.
That wasn’t blush. That wasn’t bashfulness as Evan’s eyes turned away. This had to be what Evan always sounded like as he mumbled at the ground, still shaking Tommy’s hand, “Evan’s fine.”

Excerpt:
"Tommy!" Buck screamed, lunging forward.
Eddie reacted instantly, wrapping his arms around Buck and pulling him back. "Let Chim and Hen work, Buck," he said firmly, struggling to hold his friend back.
Buck fought against Eddie's grip, his voice breaking. "I can't lose him. Eddie, I can't—"
"I know, I know," Eddie said, his voice a mix of sympathy and determination. "But you have to let them do their job."

"It wasn’t that Francesca Kinard was a bad mother, or a cruel mother, or an unloving mother; it was just that she was a young mother, fifteen years old, and unaware of how to raise a child – but really, she was a child herself, how could she know how to mother? ..."

Summary
Evan really did wash his back. And his front, and his hair. Tommy thought it might have been a ploy to get naked together, especially after all of that kissing, but Evan was very focused on the task once he shoved Tommy into his apartment’s ridiculously large bathroom. He helped Tommy undress, taking off the heavy turn out gear, stripping him down to his uniform, and then peeling the uniform from his arms and chest before gently pushing Tommy to sit on the edge of the toilet. He dropped down to his knee in a smooth motion and started unlacing Tommy’s boots, ignoring the half-hearted protests coming from Tommy’s mouth.
“It’s quicker this way,” Evan said, looking up through his lashes with a smile. “You’re moving in slow motion.”

Summary
“Hi,” The other man greeted, sticking out a large hand to shake his. Evan felt a thrill go up his spine as he felt the other’s grip and drag of his callouses against his skin, “I’m Tommy. Tommy Kinard. I was hoping to catch Captain Nash but it looks like he’s not here right now.”
“They’re out on a call.” Buck told him, stumbling over his words as his face reddened. He watched the soft pink of the man’s tongue wet his lips, watched as the other pulled away to stick his hands in his pocket, “I’m, uh, Evan. Evan Buckley. But everyone calls me Buck.”

Love, Laughter, and Family
Excerpt:
"Alright, alright," Tommy said, holding up his hands in a placating gesture once the laughter had died down. "Let's not tease your brother too much. We've all had our embarrassing moments." He paused, a sly smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "You should have your Dad tell you about our first date."
Buck's eyes widened, his face turning a bright shade of red. "Nope, absolutely not," he said, shaking his head vehemently. The memory of that particular incident was one he'd rather keep buried deep in the recesses of his mind.
