She glances down the left side of the table first—Gangle sits at the farthest end, doodling in her notebook, and Pomni is next to her, listening to Kinger beside her as he rambles on about something or another. On the other far end of the table, Zooble adds in the occasional input but is mostly quiet. And beside Ragatha, on her right, Jax is—
Oh. That’s it. Jax. He hasn’t said a word all dinner.

Confused as well as curious, he stands a little straighter and walks towards the front door. He then pulls it open and looks out upon the entrance of Queen’s mansion, only to see…nothing. There’s nobody there. And so he looks this way and that, up and down and—

Denial, Jax remembers. He knows that one. It’s the first on the list, the one that clues people in that it’s developing grief in the first place. Not that he’s grieving. That was silly. And a straight up delusional take on his situation. He doesn’t grieve.
Cartoonish purple rabbits don’t grieve.
The dead can’t speak, the guilty don’t deserve to. Pomni has Thoughts™ and makes it Jax’s whole problem.

It was absolutely unremarkable. Some girl talking to herself as she explored a building that she was clearly bored of. Nothing special.
Jax… knew that voice, though. It made all of the difference. He wanted her to say something else-- he needed her to say something else. He could hear his heartbeat in his ears. In the back of his mind, he could hear a jester-looking girl laughing at something stupid he said.
(Or: After escaping the circus, Jax finds himself back in the unchanged real world. Unfortunately, the relationships he'd made-- and didn't make-- in the Circus continued to nag at him.)

Pomni flipped the gun towards herself, eyes closing as Jax’s hand twitched forward, his smile starting to fall as he watched.
