Summary
“Are you doing alright?” Eddie asks him with a slight frown and Buck swallows, going back to tying his shoes so he doesn’t have to look at Eddie.
“Of course,” he says simply. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
“I don’t know,” Eddie replies and Buck can feel his eyes on him. “You’ve been quiet lately.”
Buck freezes in his movements for a fraction of a second. He thought that apart from the whole dinner at Bobby’s fiasco he’s been doing a pretty good job at acting like his normal self in front of everyone.
And how has Eddie of all people noticed that something is up with him? It’s not like he pays him any attention anymore.

Summary
"I've been thinking." Buck says when he finally reaches Eddie.
"That's dangerous." Eddie responds with a teasing smirk. Buck lets out a huff to show he is offended by the words to which Eddie laughs. "You were thinking." Eddie says now encouraging Buck to finish.
"We've been dating for a little over two weeks now." Buck continues on.
Eddie purses his lips. "Two weeks, three days, and-" He pauses to look down at his watch. "Roughly seven hours." Buck simply smiles at Eddie's habit of keeping specified times for certain things.
"Right." Buck breathes out, trying to recollect his thoughts. "And we haven't even been on a first date." The same realization Buck had moments ago is now washing over Eddie.

Summary
"Buck came to me concerned about his well-being," Bobby starts with a melancholic look, "we both thought that it would be best if he got away for a while to get the help he needs."
Eddie can feel his chest start to tighten like it usually does before he's sent into a panic attack. Or maybe this time he actually is having a heart attack. He doesn't know.
The only thing he does know is that Buck left. Buck left and he didn't even say goodbye.

Summary
Eddie Diaz told himself he didn’t care.
But his fingers tightened around the handle of his coffee mug as Tommy shifted closer, stretching an arm behind Buck’s shoulders, fingers playing absently with the hem of Buck’s shirt. It was a mindless touch, casual and easy—one that shouldn’t have bothered Eddie as much as it did.
And yet, it set something off inside him.
"Hey, Earth to Diaz," Chimney’s voice cut through his thoughts. "You good? You’ve been staring at them for, like, a full minute. Starting to think you got a crush on Tommy or something."
Eddie forced a scoff, rolling his shoulders back like the tension wasn’t crawling up his spine. "Yeah, you got me," he muttered. "Can’t resist a guy who wears cologne strong enough to set off the smoke detectors."

Summary
The night is screaming at him.
Buck's always been good at being loud enough to distract, bright enough to deflect, and if they notice the tired smile or the stiffness in his voice, they chalk it up to recovery. But they don't know about the dream.
About that other life.
They don’t know that every time Buck closes his eyes, he’s back in a world where Bobby was gone and Eddie never even existed in his life, and the 118 isn’t home, or family, or real.
Or,
After the lightning strike, the night is screaming at him, and Buck doesn't know in which reality to believe — the one where he was love, but wasn't himself, or the one where he loves, but isn't sure of who he is. Lightning never strikes twice, but Eddie will do everything to save Buck as many times as it takes.
