“There is a war going on,” her father said. His voice sounded muffled, as if he were speaking to her from underwater. “Our enemies will come for you because you are her daughter, so you must be prepared to survive. You must live forever.”
She slid from her chair and collapsed onto the ground.
In a single, blurry instant, Byleth remembers how her father had hovered over her, his face a splotch of color she could hardly make out.
“It will pass,” he breathed. His hand trembled through the locks of her hair. “Consuming merfolk flesh will do that to you. But when you wake up, you’ll be changed. They won’t be able to hurt you. You’ll be immortal.”
-
Or, Byleth is an immortal sailor seeking a way to finally die. Ashe is a merman seeking a way to bring his sister back home. When Byleth catches Ashe, everything changes.

Summary
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! We can’t wait until we can say Happy Hunger Games in earnest (only another month!), but in the meantime, we are celebrating the best moment of Games from years past. Make sure you also check out our list of the most iconic final showdowns and our favorite post-victory moments.
What’s on the plate for today? Glad you asked! The Games are all about triumph, but they’re also all about tragedy (which makes those victories even sweeter). Today, we’re looking at 17 final moments from Tributes that we are still thinking about. To make it harder for ourselves, we could only pick one from each Games (so if your favorite didn’t make the cut, that could be why!). Some made us scream, some made us cry, and a few even made us laugh (you’ll see!). Read on!
A listicle from Capitol Buzzfeed.

Can't find the words to explain just what a great piece of metafiction this is. Harrowing stuff, and the format is absolutely inspired. They were just kids. -

Summary
Dedue mentally relives every meal he’s ever shared with the prince in the entire time he’s known him. Not a wince when Dedue spices to his heart’s content. Not a grimace at marching rations. Not a moment of hesitation in personally demonstrating to Dedue which weeds are edible.
Never, not once in nine years, not one single smile at anything Dedue has poured his heart and soul into preparing.
“...He has no sense of taste,” Dedue realizes.

Hubert had always wanted to ride on the back of a pegasus, but had long since given it up as a hopelessly childish dream... until the prospect of attending a women-only ball at Edelgard's side brings long-repressed feelings back to the surface.

I come back to this every so often and love it every time. I already was interested in the headcanon and this fic solidified it in my heart/mind.
