Summary
This wasn’t the first time he was waking up from cryo sleep. He’d awoken here before, in various stages of panic (more times than he actually remembered).
After last awakening, Mark hadn’t anticipated ever waking up here again, confined to this cold tomb. Back to this ugly part of him he had been so sure he left behind in the chilly fingers of space. He thought he'd left for good, but it seems that Mark couldn’t escape his past after all. For as much as he wanted to take all he’d done and completely forget about it, he’d never be able to escape it. One more time. One more time to not completely mess things up for his… for the Captain.
Mark was going to start over. He was going to make all of this up to his Captain. Even if it was the last thing he did.
The Captain wasn't oblivious. And they weren't turning a blind eye to their Head Engineer.

Maybe it was during the first jump back in when you had tried to save him from the black hole, as futile as the attempt may have been. Maybe it was during either the third or fourth visit to the desert planet before it had succumbed to its apocalypse, he swears you've gone through that door more than twice by now. There's even a chance it could've been back before he became aware of the time loops, before he had even seen the wormhole, when it was only you who had a vague awareness of the cycles.
The point is, somewhere in the midst of all of it, he finds himself caught with the fact that there's a kind of fondness only you have seemed to bring out of him.

He nods once, training his gaze on the Captain once again. The furrow that was in their brow has dissipated, and instead they twitch occasionally in their unconscious state. Mark’s voice is strangely raw when he says, “I don’t know what I would have done if we hadn’t found them in time.”
Celci doesn’t know what she would have done either. One thing is for sure, though—Mark would have been devastated. Inconsolable. Ripped apart the world. There are no second chances this time around.

Mark never wore gloves while he worked. It was always his bare hands, free of any covering, that did the job. This led to you frequently being able to hear loud swears or choruses of “ow” that echoed through the halls of the Invincible II as he was shocked by wires or other electrical devices. Sometimes there would be a loud crash as he would pick up a too-hot piece of metal without thinking about it. Because of this, his hands were tough, the skin thick from the many burns that he acquired each day. They also were covered in scars. Long ones, short ones, thick ones, thin ones.
Scars weren’t the only things on Mark’s hands though. He was almost constantly covered in grease or oil. Streaks of the dark substances were permanently stuck on his hands, transferring to things he touched but never quite coming off unless he really scrubbed at them.
In which your Head Engineer is constantly dirty, and you can't help but notice.
