Soap’s heart clenched painfully another time.
He had hoped that it could become more, just like he had hoped that the 141 could become more, but he was fucking stupid.
He was a soldier, easily exchangeable for the team, and he was, if anything, a friend with benefits, for Ghost. Easily exchangeable as well.

There’s a few snickers from the other three soldiers with them born of sheer disbelief that their lieutenant just called jinx on him, and Johnny wants to laugh, too. He wants to ask if he’s still in kindergarten, if he still believes in the tooth fairy and Saint Nick and whatnot-
-but when he opens his mouth to throw a quip at the man, no sound comes out.
Frowning, he clears his throat and tries again.
Nothing.
No matter how hard he tries, his vocal cords fail to produce any noise at all.
“Oh, thank fuck,” Branshaw hisses. “You don’t ever shut up, do you? Bet your team’s just as sick of you as we are, you loudmouthed annoying arse. Can’t you see that everyone wants you to shut the fuck up?”
