"Then what is the problem?" Ilya asks, trying to keep his voice light, but Shane can hear the strain in it.
Fuck. The problem is always just... it's always Shane, isn't it? That's always the problem. He's always the fucking problem.
Shane's season-ending injury leads him to question the future, and who he is without hockey. He doesn't like the answer.

He's seen a few other guys get their bell rung. Has seen a couple of them get to their knees almost immediately; has seen them struggle to their feet, then almost wipe themselves out again. Has seen them kneeling with a dazed expression, trying to figure out where they are.
And has seen a couple of them lie there. He's been one of them before.
Swallowing down bile, he asks, "How long did I take to get up?"
Please have tried. Please, please, have been one of those guys kneeling almost immediately. Please have been moving. Please have let Ilya seen that.
A couple of years into playing on the same team together, Shane gets concussed. It's a little bit different this time.

Summary
Shane rests his head against the window. Breathes in, out. Clenches his hands into fists on his lap, then slowly uncurls them.
Nothing between his fingers now. No bedsheets, no shirt, no Ilya. No proper goodbye.
No kiss.
"Fuck," he breathes out. Fuck.
This isn't the same as all those years ago. It isn't, and he knows it. But there's a strange, hollow feeling that's starting to expand in his chest. Making his ribs feel brittle, his lungs made paper-thin.
Shane drops. It's unfortunate timing.

The plane—Ilya’s plane—is diverting to the closest airport.
Shane's next breath doesn't quite make it to his lungs. Suddenly, he is a few years in the past, hearing J.J's voice: "Woah. The Centaurs' plane had to make an emergency landing."
It's not the same. It's not.
Ilya's way home is full of delays, and Shane doesn't deal with it so well.
