Summary
It had been two months since returning to London when Charles brought up Edwin's love confession. It was a slow day with little cases, Crystal's off at college, swamped with so much paperwork and overdue homework that she's complained many times that being both a full time member of the agency and a sixth form student is too much for her. "It's either spend less time with the agency get held back a year and I would rather be possessed again than have to do that." She had said bluntly. She gave them some chunky, older cellphone to use in case of an emergency, which they've since made a scale for to determine when it's alright to ask her for help, but other than the occasional consult, it's just him and Edwin again.
It's almost strange to be alone more often than not these days, even if Charles has been missing spending time alone with Edwin. It's just.. there's some weird tension between them now, or maybe that's just Charles. Edwin is a bit awkward, reminding Charles of how the other boy was in the early years of their friendships. He's jumpier, a bit weird about touch again.
Charles hates it—he just wants things to go back to normal—so he did the one thing he hates and decided to talk about it.

Summary
Charles knew the case would affect them both, yeah. He just thought it'd be something they'd share a little look about, maybe read some Max Carrados afterwards just for the sake of nostalgia but that's not at all what happens.
Edwin doesn't say much after the case is closed— not on the walk back, which Edwin had insisted on and not when they finally find themselves back at the office after their journey home.
Charles has his back to the door so he can't help but flinch at the loud slam of what he assumes is Edwin's notebook against the surface of his desk. He whips around, eyes wide and his incorporeal heart pounding in his chest at the sudden and uncharacteristic burst of anger.
"Edwin? What the hell was that, mate?"

Summary
"I don't know if you have noticed but we are the Dead Boy Detectives, not a couple's counseling office." Edwin interrupts, words dripping with annoyance. Charles gives him a soft squeeze— a wordless scold towards his lack of bedside manner, but Edwin doesn't even spare a glance as he tries to subtly shrug the other boy's hand away, folding his hands atop the desk in front of him.
Charles tries his best to keep his face neutral, something in his stomach twisting at the brush off. He should be used it now, considering it's been four months.
Four months.
Four months since their return from Port Townsend. Four months since the Devlin House, and Esther, and David the Demon, and—
Hell.
It's been four months since Edwin looked Charles straight in the eyes and confessed that he loved him in a way Charles had never entertained; he had never even thought it was possible. Four months since Charles looked right back at his best mate—his favorite person in the world—and promised that this wouldn't change a thing between them.
Which it didn't!
At least, it didn't for Charles.
But Edwin..
Well, it just seems like Edwin wasn't exactly on the same page.

Summary
Charles has tried to keep Edwin's confession in the back of his mind at all times.
It's not like he's avoiding it. Quite the opposite, really. He's trying to figure himself out— trying to unravel all the jumbled thoughts and feelings in his head so he can give Edwin a better answer than just 'I don't know but I'll think about it!' because Edwin deserves more than that.
Edwin deserves some sort of closure, an answer to his open question.
It's been six months since Port Townsend. The four of them—Edwin, Charles, Crystal and yes, Niko after being brought back from the Neitherlands with some wicked, new powers they were still sussing out—have fallen into a bit of a routine. It's comfortable, a bit predictable and after all the excitement those months ago, Charles cherishes it while it lasts.
It takes one bloody case to throw that comfort and predictability straight out the window.

"I'm finished." Charles declares with a triumphant grin. He holds up A Collection Of Greek Myths as if it is something to be treasured and Edwin can't help but smile.
"I told you that you shouldn't."
"I know, I know. You said I would hate it."
"And?" Edwin inquires with the raise of a brow.
Charles' grin quickly dissolves into something solemn and thoughtful. "I absolutely hated it, mate."
Edwin hums in agreement. He supposed he didn't love the ending of Orpheus and Eurydice's tale either.

Edwin's clearly biting back an automatic "careful" in response, bless him. Charles' lips tug up as if he hears it anyway.
"Seeing you, stepping out there in the way you have been. It's proper inspiring. And I reckon, if you can start to grow up after thirty years, then maybe I can too."
After a walk on Christmas Eve, Charles takes the first step into forever.

Desire is having so much fun with him, why would they want this to stop?
Or: Charles' yearning for Edwin gets so ridiculously loud that Desire needs to personally take care of it, but he's too dumb to realize it's been Edwin all along
