Eddie’s hand froze mid air, bottle halfway to his mouth. "When you and Marisol ran into me and Tommy, we were on a date".
It hit like a punch to the chest - small, clean, precise. For a second, Eddie forgot how to breathe.

“Eddie Diaz,” Eddie says into the radio. “I’m still alive down here— I’m still—” and the grief that fills his body is like nothing else. His radio is broken, no one is listening, he’s been down here too long. “Please—” his sob breaks off and Eddie can feel the tears starting to slide down his face.
The tears slide down either side of his face onto the ground either side of him. His body threatens to shake with sobs, a small noise leaves Eddie’s mouth. He doesn’t have the room needed to cover his mouth with his hand.
He’s been down here too long. They might be looking for him but when they find him it’s too late—

He heard a throaty laugh. “Where else I’m gonna be, Eddie?”
“Just checking. Bobby said 10 minutes. You sure you’re OK?”
“Worried about you, man. You sound a little out of it. Stay with me, Eds. Keep talking to me”.
“What do you want to talk about, babe?”
Buck was quiet for a beat.
“Well, we could start with why you just called me “babe”. What’s that about, Eddie?”

Summary
The idea comes to him on one of his drives through the mountains.
He’s driving up, and up, and up until the road has a steep, sheer drop on one side, and nobody’s driving alongside him. He’s headed to the top of a mountain. There’s a gravel pull-off right before a hairpin turn. The turn is protected by a flimsy guardrail.
Eddie parks on the pull-off and walks over to look past the guardrail.
Nothing underneath. Just dry underbrush. A shallow stream right at the bottom. Thin vegetation. If a car missed the curve at a fair speed, it would plummet down the cliff. Next to no chance of survival.
And Eddie’s known to drive, to clear his own head. He used to do it to find hiking trails for him and Buck, or roadside attractions or activities that Christopher might like. It’s a known hobby of his. He’s a good driver.
So it’s not convincing if he crashes in good weather. He’ll have to wait for a storm.
But it’ll work. It has to work.
(Or: Eddie and all the ways you shouldn't love your loved ones.)
