Summary
Let’s talk about Tom Riddle, whose father left and whose mother died, who grew up with harsh hands and harsher voices and a war spitting to life outside his bedroom window, who learned to make himself strong and take what he wants and survive. This is not about forgiveness. It is not about pity, either. It is about understanding, or at least trying to.
Tom Riddle grew up starved of touch and warmth. His mother held him once, then died. Is it any wonder he tried so hard to flee from death?
When he was younger, he stared at the stars and the vastness of the night and it took his breath away. When he was younger, he yearned with open hands and dreamed of flying, of family, of reaching out and touching the sky. (The couples who came to the orphanage never wanted him, this dirty orphan whose eyes even then were just a little too sharp, and he grew older and colder and he learned not to care, to want himself.
This is what happens when you grow up told that you are nothing: in your head, you make yourself everything.)

Percy’s mother was nice, pretty, caring and terribly unlucky.
Percy knew that. He knew that his mother had been through a lot, and he also knew that the tale she had told him, about parents that died in plane crashes and uncles that died of cancer, was not the truth. Or at least not the entirety of it anyway. He still remembered the one time he had found this book squashed somewhere in the last nook of the bookshelf. It was a deep green and when he opened it the name Saffine Riddle was written on the upper left corner in neat letters.

There was another student here.
Tom recognized him vaguely—while transfer students were not necessarily uncommon due to the war, they were rare enough to at least make an impression. This particular transfer student was in his year, sorted into Ravenclaw after an impressively long hat stall. He looked like he might be descended from the Potter line, but he did not share the surname so his lineage was of no particular interest to Tom. Nothing about him was of particular interest to Tom, in fact, and yet here he stood, holding the book that Tom had come here to find.
It would be a good time to turn away. The Restricted Section was restricted for a reason—only books documenting extremely dangerous or extremely advanced magic were stored here.
Tom’s feet, however, suddenly felt as if they were made of lead. It wasn’t magic keeping him tied down, but something far more mysterious like curiosity or even fate. In any case, the delay was all it took for the Ravenclaw to lift his chin and meet Tom’s eyes.
This Ravenclaw, Tom realized, had eyes as blindingly green as the Killing Curse.
