'Ahh, you’re a special one, aren’t you?'
Viktor almost jumped out of his skin, but the voice inside his head just laughed.
'I’m just the hat. You’re not losing your mind. Not yet, anyway.' The voice that was apparently the hat paused, as though it was searching for something, before making a satisfied ‘hmm’ noise, like it had made up its mind. 'You have quite the amount of potential, young one. A drive to learn. A cracking wit. And a mind fit to fight itself out of even the most dire of circumstances, don’t you?'
'I guess?' Viktor responded in his mind and the hat chuckled again.
'Find your friends, here. You don’t have to be a loner to be brilliant.'

When Viktor finally asks why Jayce stayed behind inside the Anomaly with him, Jayce stares at him as though he’s supremely disappointed by the question— as if Viktor has betrayed his own brilliance by asking something so irredeemably stupid. “How could I not? We’re partners.”
Partners, Jayce calls them. Not for the first time, Viktor wonders: Partners in what?
