Summary
It’s the sight of a familiar tan fabric that starts to rip his heart into two distinct pieces. Dean scans up its owner’s slack clad legs, his eyes fall upon the coat’s belt, because its a trench, and with more pain in his chest than he knew was ever possible, he catches sight of the blue tie. He can’t look any higher up out of fear of what he’s going to see. He knows the pain he’ll feel, and he hates himself for it. More so, he hates whatever monster is exploiting his agony to show him the face of the man he’s lost.

Summary
Castiel is so sorry.
Castiel is so ashamed.
Who was Castiel to want? Should he not have known better? Just look at where it’s gotten him: pathetically crying, and unwanted by the one man he gave everything up for.
(TLDR: Post-Empty Cas realizing he has to shave his facial hair now that he’s human and Dean has to help, breakdown ensues)

Summary
Dean lowers his gun, his eyes darting around the room. His hair is sleep-mussed and flat on one side, and his stubble has grown in darker overnight. His eyes are blurry as they scan the room, but they brighten just a little when they land on Castiel.
“Who’s making me coffee?” Dean groans, as he rolls over and tucks his gun away. His voice is low and hoarse with sleep, and he buries his face in his pillow in a huff.
A 13x06 coda.

Summary
He lifts Dean's head up with tender fingers until they are looking in each other's eyes, and his thumb wipes the tears on his cheek.
“Hi,” Dean says.
“Hello," Cas smiles.
"Cas?" Dean asks, and a sob is threatening to break out of his throat again, this time brought on by the overwhelming rush of his senses and reality coming back to him, not brighter and louder, but more tangible. "Don't ever leave."
Cas' face changes surreptitiously, eyebrows lifting ever slightly. “Dean—"
"Don't. Don't argue with me, Cas. Just stay. Please. Please."
The expression on Cas' face is one of awe, and somewhere in Dean's mind he thinks the painting must have shifted to show a halo around him, too.
"Alright," Cas says. "If this is what you really want."
"Cas," Dean whispers, and he can't imagine why it was so difficult to say it before. It's the most natural thing in the world. "I want you." He brings Castiel's hand to his lips. "Wherever we are, whatever we're doing, I want you. I need you."

Summary
In the moments he’s let himself imagine it, Cas has imagined his escape as something violent: a portal tearing open and apart, the sensation of his grace ripping out of him, the Empty screaming as he went. He’s imagined tumbling back into the bunker and collapsing to the concrete, knees aching, covered in blood and oozing black goo. He’s imagined pain.
The reality is different. One moment, Cas is in the Empty, and the next, he’s not. The next, he’s standing in the middle of a familiar dirt road, stars shining above him in the ink-black Kansas sky.
