Jisung blinks. "Why not?"
Minho's eyes are wide, pupils blown, mouth still parted like he's stunned by his own reaction. He looks wrecked. Wrecked and absolutely terrified.
"We just can't," Minho says again. Harsher this time. Like saying it harder might make it more true.

Summary
When he heard the voice, he’d pictured something of beauty. A creature of perfection, one that would render him speechless, take all thoughts from his mind and replace them with thoughts only of the beautiful voice. Siren or not, he was aware of the draw the melodic sound had on him, and he was certain the holder of such a voice would match it in appearance.
There was no way for Minho to be prepared when the figure pulled themselves onto another rock, water cascading off their skin.
Even knowing—hoping—what they were, it still knocked the breath from his lungs, eyes widening.
Sleek sapphire scales shimmered silver where the sunlight touched them, beginning just below the waist and flowing into a long, powerful tail. It curved slightly where it rested on the stone, the wide fin causing ripples in the water where it dipped due to the tail’s length.
Minho couldn’t look away. The sheer beauty of it—not just the tail, but the way it moved, fluid and real—left him utterly still. Rid of any breath he could’ve wished to breathe.

Summary
"Merpeople aren't real," Jisung blurts out, his statement contradicted before it's even out of his mouth as he stares at the shimmering blue tail attached to the man in his pool.
"Oh, sorry. Let me go inform my entire society that we don't exist," the man - the merman - snarks, hissing as he tugs on the net stuck under his scales.
Jisung has a lot of questions, some of them scientific and most of them stupid, but the stupidest one of all is somehow the one his brain lets slip past his lips. "How do you piss?"
(OR: Minho comes to shore determined to prove that love isn't real. Jisung thinks he can prove him wrong in order to get his wish of getting out of his hometown. Things do not go as planned for either of them.)

Jisung smiles and it’s genuine. “No. But you do.”
Minho snorts and sits back in his chair, surprised at the certainty in which Jisung speaks. “I think you’re pushing your luck.”
“I don’t think it’s luck.”
“So it is fate,” Minho teases, cocking his head. He picks up his notepad and takes his pen out from behind his ear, underlining the word ‘romantic’ with two tight lines.
“No,” Jisung says again, big eyes turning sad. “I think things just happen. Even when they’re not supposed to.”
(OR: Minho and Jisung find each other in every life, even when the universe doesn't want them to. It does everything to stop them and they do everything to keep going.)

Minho doesn’t tell him about the dreams he has. There are things they share with each other, and things they don’t. It’s a comfortable habit, a familiar truth. Minho thinks— he thinks if he tells Jisung he dreams of a future he spends with him, it would break the habit, and it would cost him the comfort of waking up from those dreams to find Jisung wrapped in his arms.
“Yeah,” he says, because he may not share everything with Jisung, but he is not a liar, he cannot deny that he too hates them. But he can’t let them soak in the truth for too long a time either. He follows it in the same breath with, “We should get up.”

Summary
Whenever Minho thinks back on his life, it saddens him to realize that not a lot went as planned. From how he saw his life going back when he was still in high school, Jisung being in his life is the only thing that remains unchanged.
Their lives might not be what they envisioned when they were just treading the waters of their budding crushes, but Minho thinks things are much better like this. To live a quiet, stable life with Jisung next to him means more to him than any dreams of performing he might have had a lifetime ago.

“Okay,” Jisung finally says, face splitting into a wide smile. One that still feels a bit dusty but he remembers all the same.
“That’s all it took?” Minho laughs, and it's high and sweet. Not sinister at all. Not even a trickster, just a man on a mission. Determination running rampant through him. “I was ready to beg.”
Jisung is almost one hundred percent sure there is no way he will ever be able to transmute what Minho wants him to, but he’ll cross that bridge when he gets there. For now, he will wade in the joy, the feeling of something new approaching him for the first time ever.
“So, where are we going?” Jisung asks, unable to keep the excitement from his voice. “Hell?”
“Worse,” Minho shudders. “Palm Springs.”
