It was an emergency. Yeah it really was an emergency because he almost swerved into the river when the Yorozuya suddenly leaned over to him from the passenger seat, so close that he could hear him breathe in for a millisecond.
“What the fuck are you doing!?”
“S-sorry I just, I think I remember that smell—”
“—Wha-what?!”
“I remember that smell… of… of you?”
OR
What if Gintoki lost his memories after an accident(just like those few Gintama episodes) but for some reason Hijikata is the only person he sort of remembers? Of course then it somehow falls on Hijikata to help him with all that even though he'd rather do just about anything else with his life
