Summary
It started with something simple.
a conversation between friends. An invitation. Reluctance to said invitation. Then curiosity. And without warning or permission, it metastasized into something Shauna did not know she was capable of.

She had always imagined her life as a straight, clean line - and completed in two simple phases. She graduated high school with a perfect 4.0 and an early admission to Brown. That was phase one, and she completed it flawlessly.
Phase two was supposed to be just as precise. Finish all four years at Brown with that same sharp discipline. Graduate with grades and a degree polished and impressive enough to lay enticingly on any employer’s desk. Land a position at a prestigious publishing house. Spend the rest of her days writing. And who knows, maybe find a nice guy to settle down with.
Straight. Clean. Simple, right?
Wrong. So fucking wrong.

Their eyes lock, and the atmosphere in the room shifts for what feels like the umpteenth time tonight. Kate’s gaze flicks to Yelena’s lips, tinted crimson thanks to a small split.
