Summary
‘No, I just—I think people should be there for other people because that’s—that’s what friends do, right? It’s what family’s supposed to do. People shouldn’t wait until someone’s in a fucking hospital bed or—or your parents shouldn’t suddenly wanna spend time with you just because they think you might kill yourself or something. Isn’t this—aren’t we worthy of more? Am I not worthy of more? ‘Cuz this sucks, and I know you think you know, but you have no fucking idea about my life. And that’s the problem, isn’t it? All of us—we’re just dealing with our own shit and we get mad at each other for not seeing it.’
Or: Sixteen is a fraught age, and the city loves a fucked-up group of self-destructive teenagers.

Summary
He lets out a humourless laugh, head springing back up. ‘Don’t therapise me, kid. I hate that shit.’
‘I’m not—Jesus, Marcus. I’m here! I’m trying to talk to you. What the fuck has all your therapy been for if you think having a conversation deeper than the range of a teaspoon is me trying to therapise you?’
Or: Ginny once told Marcus she didn’t want to be like her parents. It turns out some things really are just in her blood.

Summary
‘Ginny,’ he begins, voice lowered. ‘I’m in love with you, okay? You. I’m here for all of it, your anger, your hurt, your ugly, I don’t care. It’s me and you forever, right?’
She feels her heart get heavy. That distinct pressure is back. ‘And I love you, okay? All of you,’ she manages to push out. ‘Today, tomorrow, forever. But I don’t want you to carry it for me ‘cuz I don’t wanna carry your shit, Marcus. It would kill me. And it already kills me that I can’t help you the way you’ve helped me.’
Or: Ginny and Marcus crumble.

Summary
She trembles as she chokes back tears. ‘God, I wish this baby was yours.’
He wipes the tears streaming down her face with his thumbs. It kind of calms her down. He’s so gentle. She wishes he were like this with himself.
Cracking a grin, he clears his throat. Another Marcus Baker joke, probably. They’re so stupid, but she loves them. Loves him. ‘You wish the baby you’re aborting—aborted, actually—was mine?’
‘You know what I mean,’ she sniffles, playfully hitting his arm.
‘I think I’d like you to explain to me what you mean, Virginia,’ Marcus grins.
Or: The one where Marcus comforts Ginny after her abortion, and they talk about the future they so desperately want with each other.

Summary
‘Too late for that, I think,’ she muses.
He cracks a small smile. ‘Sorry. I just, this thing between us, whatever it is—’
‘—A bullshit friendship with weird sexual tension?’
Marcus lets out an honest-to-God laugh. She’s just—wow. ‘Yeah, that, whatever.’ She laughs, too. It’s melodic, a perfect tune he wants to bottle up and keep forever. ‘It just feels like we have this thing going, you know? I climb through your window, you’re mad, then we hug and like, almost kiss, and then I leave again. And it’s our thing. But if it makes you uncomfortable, I promise I’ll stop.’
There’s a beat of silence. And then—
‘Our thing,’ she says. She says it in this delicate tone, like she’s tasting it, savouring it on her tongue.
Or: The one where Marcus comforts Ginny after the chaos in her life reaches a heartbreaking peak. And maybe they find their own little piece of paradise.

Summary
It’s supposed to feel like a mistake. It’s supposed to feel like the betrayal it is. She’s supposed to feel the fury of a thousand gods descend on her for her cardinal sin. It’s supposed to be another lapse in judgement. But his lips are soft. Too soft. She responds in kind without even thinking about it, like it’s embedded in her DNA. Like she’s done this a thousand times before in a hundred different lives.
