Dean could be an angel sent to save him or a lost soul that would doom him to wander forever beside him - and Cas was willing to accept both outcomes, was willing to bend the knee one way or the other, whatever he asked.
"I wanted to see you," Dean answered simply, quietly, but the wait in the air, the anticipation, said far more than words could.

The action develops in Chicago in the fifties after the war, when Dean began to cooperate with the police on the case of murders committed by his already dead father, and gradually gets drawn too deeply not only into the whole case but also into a relationship with a certain blue-eyed detective, confident that Dean is worthy of saving.

It's amidst the Murder Epidemy that Dean has to look for his missing mother with his remaining family. People kill "sinners" and claim that the Angels showed them the way of redemption - so is it all that wise to allow Castiel of the Lord to come to their aid?
Maybe he should be selfish, maybe he shouldn't give a damn when all he has is his anger at the world and Cas makes him feel like he belongs somewhere.
And maybe forbidden love and finding yourself in time of a bloody crusade does make for a good story.
