Summary
Garraty clears his throat, then asks, “What about you, Pete? You got a lady?”
McVries holds Garraty’s gaze for a moment, intensely, then says, “No, Ray. No, I don’t.”
Every molecule of Raymond Garraty slows to a snail’s pace. McVries peers at him, dark eyes half-lidded, smiling softly. Garraty feels a little like he’s fallen behind in a race he didn’t know he was running.
They keep looking at each other, silently, until McVries’s lips quirk up like Garraty’s said something funny, and he lifts his bottle to his lips.
“What is it?” Garraty asks. “What’s so funny?”
McVries shakes his head, still wearing that knowing smile. “Nothing, Ray. Not a thing.”
Ray Garraty and Peter McVries fuck around, get together, and fall in love. Not necessarily in that order.

Summary
Mac's fingers grip Dennis's hair harder, but not hard enough to hurt, which pisses Dennis off. Hurt me, Dennis thinks, I deserve it. The hollow of Dennis's heart yawns wide as a chasm, as an abyss. Fill me up with something other than all this nothing.
But Mac doesn't. His grip on Dennis is only a reassurance that Dennis is here, really here, on his knees for Mac. His eyes are full of reverence, devotion to Dennis and Dennis alone.
Dennis is drunk, sure, but he's wasted on the way Mac looks at him.
After Paddy's becomes a queer hot spot, Dennis and Mac, inadvisably, fool around.

Summary
“Okay,” says Mac, accepting the Bible. It’s heavier than it looks, but that might be in Mac’s head. “Leviticus 20:13,” he reads, “A man who lies with another man should be stoned.”
Dennis asks, “Didja bring a J?”
Mac taps the joint tucked behind his ear. “I brought two.” He pats at his pockets, feeling for the second one he rolled.
“Excellent,” says Dennis. “Well, smoke that and then you can fuck me, yeah?”
Every atom in Mac screeches to a halt, all at once. “What?”
At a frat party, Dennis presents Mac with a loophole.

Summary
“You just kissed me!” Dennis exclaims. He raises his hand to his mouth and brushes his fingertips across his lips in disbelief. They’re still sensitive, buzzing from the contact.
“I thought—” Mac stumbles over his words, pushes his hair back from his face. “I just thought— I mean, you were the one who leaned in first!”
Dennis sputters, incredulous, “What, you thought I was going to kiss you?”
“What else was I supposed to think?” Mac asks, his voice bordering on hysterical.
“Mac, do you even know what shotgunning is?”
Mac throws his hands up in frustration. “Of course I do! I call shotgun, like, all the time in the car—”
“Oh my god, Mac, you’re a drug dealer, how can you not know what shotgunning is?”
After an attempt at shotgunning a joint goes awry, Dennis and Mac fool around under the bleachers.

Summary
“I thought we were— I don’t know. Friends, almost.”
At that, Dash barks out a laugh. He’s got a lot of feelings about Marshall Teller, but friendship isn’t one of them. When he looks at Marshall, he feels… hungry, in a way he can’t describe. Afraid, in a way he isn’t comfortable with. Needy, in a way he’ll never admit. When he looks at Marshall, with his soft blue eyes and his warmth, Dash wants to crawl under Marshall’s skin so he can never be rid of Dash.
Dash doesn’t say any of that.
“Oh, Teller,” he says instead, standing up. “We’ll never be friends.”

Summary
Mac wants Dennis more than anything, with an intensity bordering on idolatry. It's love, as much as Mac's experienced it.
Dennis wants to be wanted, and he wants Mac to want him. He doesn't know if that's love, doesn't think love is in his lexicon, but it's the best he can give.
