He's hardly ever gone more than a couple years without switching schools, and his Mom finally came to the conclusion that the bullying problem was getting so bad that she was shipping him off to a boarding school in Sierra. Will doesn't really think there will be any less bullies, but he's more concerned about living so far from his Mom. Sleeping in a whole different county.

Summary
They were here for one reason and one reason alone. The end of the world was upon them. Maybe he was being a little dramatic, but that was how he saw it.
Only, they were coming here to run from it. But the problem was that so far, California seemed just as empty and uncannily desolate as every other state they had passed through. He had been holding out hope that the apocalypse was somehow reserved for the Midwest, but that hope was rapidly evaporating.
Mike first saw it on the news, the reporters telling everyone to stay in their homes and quarantine. That was off-putting enough, but what was worse was when he saw it for himself. Bloodied people in hospital gowns, clawing at the windows and chasing people down the street. Even his parents' charming house at the end of cul-de-sac wasn't safe.

Will was fine. Really, he was.
He was content, at least. His grades were up, he was still painting and drawing in his downtime, and he went out to the movies and found new music to listen to. He wasn’t constantly fighting for his life anymore. Really, what had he to complain about?
But life is funny like that sometimes. One minute, you could be fine being a nobody at some high school in California, and the next—well, life has a way of sneaking up on you.
